Crow Questions: Before Stories

Updated: Aug 21, 2019

Welcome to the first of a new segment here called "Crow Questions", where we talk to bands, artists and other people who are friends or doing something similar to what we do at Ice Cream For Crow.

For our first one, we have Before Stories.

Who are you, what do you play and where are you from?

Colin: I play guitar and make beats - from Glasgow, live in Aberdeen.

Jamie: play guitar and make words. From Ackergill(Caithness)

What sort of music do you make?

Spoken/shouted word over minimal beats and guitars.

What are your influences?

Colin: Listener, Arab Strap, The Fall, Suicide, Spacemen 3.

Jamie: La Dispute. Jamie T.

What is the song writing process like for you?

Colin: I write beats and riffs, Jamie writes riffs and lyrics - we write together and apart so it varies, Jamie will bring in a whole song and we’ll deconstruct it or I’ll have a beat or riff that sparks some lyrics.

Do you have anything new in the works?

We Just released an EP, probably start writing again later this year

Was there any record labels you loved or still do?

Colin: Factory - I loved the theming they did and everything being part of a larger whole.

Mute - great for consistency, you could buy a mute release unheard when I were a lad.

Jamie: Xtra mile and producer Mike Sapone have done some good things but no great love of any labels as such.

What would your dream gig be?

Colin: Glasgow, Barrowlands, Teenage Fanclub.

Jamie: that time we supported listener in tunnels was pretty much a dream.

Any local venues or bands you would recommend?

Local venues - just wherever there’s room to play

Local Bands:

Depeche Choad

Casper Heyzeus

Min Diesel

Kitchen Cynics

Autohuman

Empty maps

Gulls

Seas Starry

Karma for Vandals

Plenty more..

Any up coming gigs?

Nothing announced at the moment

Anything you would like to add?

Colin: Not really, Jamie usually does the talking

Jamie: "......"

Before Stories are very active within the Aberdeen scene.

They are known for playing their own brand of quiet/loud post rock spoken word music up and down scotland.

They are also members of punch face champion( gig promoters ), helping out touring/local bands with gigs and making aberdeen a bit more lively with sound.

Jamie is also in the bands Broadsea, Audiokicks, Ceramics, All stations go and has also released music solo under his own name.

Colin records under the name Yolo Tengo, which has an ambient electronica kind of vibe - nothing released as yet but he is gearing up to put an EP out later this year.
